Whether you're an unsure first-time parent, or would just like more support this time around, an experienced doula can make a big difference!
Studies show that families whose births were attended by doulas were more likely to have spontaneous vaginal births and less likely to have any pain medication, epidurals, negative feelings about childbirth, vacuum or forceps-assisted birth, and cesarean births. In addition, labor time was decreased by an average of 40 minutes and their babies were less likely to have low APGAR scores at birth. Doulas not only make birth more enjoyable, but also to make births smoother, shorter and less painful.
As your doula, I will help you prepare for, then guide and support you through your big day...
"If you don't know your options, you don't have any!"
Together, we will sort out your preferences and create a birth plan. I will provide you with evidence-based information on the most common interventions and procedures, including risks, benefits and alternatives of each one. Having a clear understanding of what to expect and an outline of your wishes will help you feel more in control and less overwhelmed when you're in labor. As your birth progresses, I will provide you with additional information and on-the-spot childbirth education as needed to help you make informed choices.
"Stand and deliver!"
I will suggest positions that naturally enhance labor and reduce discomfort. I will also help you use movement, a birth ball and other techniques that can shorten labor by achieving optimal fetal positioning.
"Don't just do something -- lay there!"
I will act as a guide for you, making suggestions about when to move and when to rest. Using a combination of soothing touch, aromatherapy, hydrotherapy, visualizations, breathing and other techniques, I will help you relax to help your labor progress while you conserve energy to go the distance.
"Lean on me..."
Having continuous support by a knowledgeable and loving companion is proven to greatly improve the labor experience. Just like a sports coach or trainer, I will keep you focused and inspired during the long and intense birth process. I will hold your hand, wipe your brow, rub your back and see you through this journey.
